Best Fruit Fly Traps: Bait Bottles, Fan Traps and Light Traps
The best fruit fly traps: Super Ninja bait bottles, a DOVSAV fan trap, LFSYS light trap and cup covers, and Zevo, plus how to find the source and stop fruit flies.
The best fruit fly trap for most kitchens is the Super Ninja 4-pack, small clear bottles of fruit-scented bait that stick to a counter or bin and start catching within a day without a strong smell. DOVSAV's fan trap pulls flies onto a hidden sticky pad overnight, LFSYS's plug-in light trap is the budget electric option with plenty of refills, LFSYS's sticky cup covers turn any glass of vinegar into a trap, and Zevo's light trap suits rooms with gnats as well. Every trap works far better once you find and remove whatever the flies are breeding in.
- A University of Kentucky fact sheet warns that a fruit fly problem continues no matter how often insecticides are applied if breeding sites remain; a single rotting potato or onion can breed thousands of flies.
- Fruit flies can go from egg to adult in about a week, so traps catch adults while new ones keep hatching until the source is gone.
- Light traps work best in dark rooms without competing light; bait traps work best right where flies gather.
Do Fruit Fly Traps Work?
They work well as part of a two-step fix. The University of Kentucky's entomology fact sheet on fruit flies describes the classic jar trap as a simple but effective way to catch remaining adult flies, and warns that the problem will continue no matter how often insecticides are applied if breeding sites remain. A trap on its own catches flies for days while new ones hatch from a forgotten onion in the pantry.
So the right sequence is: find and remove the breeding source, clean the area, then set traps to catch the adults that are left. Done that way, most fruit fly problems clear up within a week or two. Done the other way round, people often conclude that traps do not work.
Our flying insect guides also cover house fly traps, wasp sprays and moth traps, and the fruit fly trap section has a homemade trap guide as well.

Find the Breeding Source First
Fruit flies lay their eggs on the surface of fermenting food and moist organic film. The Kentucky fact sheet notes that females lay about 500 eggs and that adults are only about 1/8 inch long, which explains how a few flies become dozens so quickly. Check these spots:
- Produce: ripe bananas, tomatoes and stone fruit on the counter, and potatoes and onions in a dark cupboard, where one soft one is easy to miss.
- Recycling: cans, bottles and juice cartons with a little residue inside.
- Trash and compost pails: including the bottom of the can under the bag.
- Drains and garbage disposals: the slimy film inside pipes feeds both fruit flies and drain flies.
- Mops, sponges and rags: damp, sour cleaning tools are a common hidden source.
- Spills: under the refrigerator, stove and toaster, and in the gap beside appliances.
Refrigerate ripe produce or eat it, the fact sheet advises, and throw out anything soft or rotting. Rinse recycling, take the trash out, wash the bin, and scrub drains with a brush before pouring boiling water down them. Then set traps.

We compared fruit fly traps on how they attract flies, where they suit, upkeep and what buyers report about catches, odor and value. Our sources were the makers' listings, Amazon's review digests and the University of Kentucky and UC IPM guidance cited here; we did not test the products. We left out bait traps whose buyers mostly report that the lure dried out quickly or caught nothing, and a drain treatment with mostly negative value reviews.

Where to Put Fruit Fly Traps
Place traps where flies hover, not across the room. Fruit flies stay close to their food, so the best spots are next to the trash and recycling, beside the sink, near a compost pail and wherever produce has been sitting. A trap on the far side of the kitchen catches little.
University of California IPM's pest note on flies notes that ultraviolet light traps may be effective indoors where they are not competing with daylight. For light traps, that means running them at night or in a room without bright windows, and keeping other lights off. Bait traps work around the clock but should be moved away from any fresh fruit that would compete with them.
Use more than one trap if flies are spread through the house, and give them a few days. Catches are usually highest in the first two days and then drop as the adults are caught; if they do not drop, look again for a hidden breeding spot.
Fruit Flies, Drain Flies and Gnats
Small flies in the kitchen are not always fruit flies, and the fix depends on which you have.
- Fruit flies: tan bodies and red eyes, hovering around produce, recycling and trash; bait traps and cider vinegar work best.
- Drain flies: fuzzy, moth-like and gray, resting on walls near sinks and showers; they breed in the film inside drains, so scrubbing the drain with a stiff brush matters more than traps.
- Fungus gnats: slender, dark and long-legged, rising from houseplant soil; letting the soil dry between waterings and sticky cards at soil level solve most cases.
Drain flies can be stubborn because the film that feeds them sits deep in the pipe. Brushing the drain, flushing it with hot water and cleaning the overflow hole on a sink usually ends them within a week or two.
Common Questions About Fruit Fly Traps
What is the fastest way to get fruit flies out of your house?
What is the fastest way to get fruit flies out of your house?
Remove the source the same day: refrigerate or throw out ripe produce, take out the trash and recycling, and scrub the sink drain. Then set bait traps where the flies hover; most adults are caught within a couple of days.
What is irresistible to fruit flies?
What is irresistible to fruit flies?
Fermenting fruit smells: overripe bananas, cider vinegar, wine and beer. A small glass of cider vinegar with a slice of overripe banana is one of the strongest baits you can make at home.
Can I trap fruit flies with a banana peel?
Can I trap fruit flies with a banana peel?
Yes. A peel in a jar covered with plastic wrap poked with small holes, or under a sticky cup cover, draws fruit flies in. Replace it every couple of days before it starts breeding flies itself.
What smell do fruit flies hate most?
What smell do fruit flies hate most?
No smell reliably repels fruit flies. Some people use citrus or herbs, but the effect is small; removing ripe fruit and residue and trapping the adults works far better.
Can you get rid of fruit flies in one hour?
Can you get rid of fruit flies in one hour?
Not completely. Traps can catch many adults within an hour, but eggs and larvae in fruit, drains or trash keep hatching for days. Plan on a week of traps after removing the source.
Which One Should You Buy?
Super Ninja's fruit fly traps are the ones to buy for most kitchens. They are small, nearly odorless, stick where the flies are and start catching quickly, and a 4-pack covers the counter, sink and trash.
Choose DOVSAV's fan trap for a steady problem at night, LFSYS's plug-in for a budget light trap, LFSYS's cup covers to upgrade a vinegar trap, and Zevo where gnats share the room. With any of them, clear out ripe produce, rinse the recycling and scrub the drains first.
Before you buy, look closely at the flies, since fruit flies, drain flies and gnats each need a different fix.
